"Bye dad, I'm going up to the woods" I managed to spit out before
diving out the door into the cool outside air...it had been two days
since I was tried as a vampire, it was all kind of a blur and I didn't
remember much other than the fact that Peter, a boy living further along
the street had managed to save me.
Suddenly I heard someone
calling my name, startling me out of my memory."Kate!" Peter began to
jog towards me from his long drive..are you okay, you know after what
happened?"
"Yeah, I'm okay thank you for saving me...I thought I
was really a gonna", I managed to break a small smile before the pain of
what had happened dawned on me again.
" How did they find out, I
never even realised that you were a...vampire" he managed to finish in a
hushed tone as not to alert others who were out enjoying the early
afternoon sun.
" I didn't want anyone to know, it is far to dangerous for me now."
"Kate-
what happened that made them come after you?" He was like a curious
puppy, but he was trustworthy enough so I decided to spill.
I
was walking to the woods, and as I went down the road, I saw a man
leaving a house quickly with a handful of expensive looking jewellery;
he was shifty so I decided to be a model citizen and try to find out
what was going on. I could hear him talking on the phone about hitting
the next house before being picked up. So I walked up to him, and
questioned what he was going. He started getting threatening so I was
prepared when he lunged at me with a knife. I moved out of the way but
made sure to get my point across. I compelled him to return the
jewellery, released my fangs and bit him. He screamed, pathetic robber
and someone called the police for me attacking him me, I was saving the
houses. But they didn't listen, they did a few tests and the next thing I
knew they called a vampire hunter....
Pete didn't say anything just mouthed 'o'.
I soon continued after a moment of thinking....
Then
a few days later they arrived at my parents door asking for me. They
wanted me to step outside into the sun, expecting me to burn or to
refuse but I stepped out and stayed perfectly protected; magic has its
uses. They then spent the whole day attempting to prove I was a member
of the undead- garlic, holy water, crosses, silver. Everything, but
nothing worked. The problem came when they brought out the blood; we had
run out at home so I was starving, and as soon as they popped the top
off the bottle the smell hit me. I knew it was going to happen, that my
eyes would turn vivid silver and bloodshot and that my fangs would snap
down but then you stepped in and saved me....and i cannot thank you
enough.
By the time the story was over we had walked the path towards the woods and entered into the darkness of the thick leaf canopy.
I
could sense Pete was burning with questions, he was always like that
even when we were growing up. "So why didn't the garlic, or silver
effect you if your a vampire?" Pete was looking very bemused, he
obviously got all of his vampire knowledge from very old vampire movies
or books.
"Garlic only effects some types of vampires but not me, Holy water too and crucifixes, they just don't effect me or my friends"
"You
have friends- who are vampires" He was shocked, even more shocked when
he started thinking. "Were you going out to feed ?" Pete asked with a
terrified look on his face.
"Yes I was but not in the way you
think, I have a blood bag In my jacket" as I said it I pulled out a B-
blood bag from my jacket pocket. "I don't drink blood from humans, not
anymore, its too dangerous and too messy".
"But your a vampire",
he retorted in a monotone voice, obviously not understanding why she was
saying it.."You're a vampire your meant to bite people, kill people"
"I
used to, I used to hunt and I used to kill; but the blood was like a
drug, I had to stop. Anyway I didn't choose to become a vampire, I was
murdered..."
I was sure he stopped breathing," You- you were murdered" he asked looking very shocked..
"Yeah
I was murdered, I was attacked in these woods, a rogue vampire drained
my blood. But I didn't die, a vampire came to help me; he fed me his
blood hoping I would heal but I didn't, someone broke my neck and I was
turned..."
"Oh...I-I'm sorry...but what about sunlight? I thought
all vampires burned in the sun." I looked up at him and wondered whether
the gift of walking in the sun should be known to humans. But I decided
that I could and began to get up from the branch we had been sitting
on, I walked up the the single patch of sunlight that had managed to
reach the forest floor. Looking at Pete, then down at the blue opal ring
on my finger, gripped it, twisted and slowly pulled it along the length
of my finger. As it came off I placed it carefully on the ground where I
was sure I could still see it... And as I released the ring from my
grasp me skin began to smoke,as I began to burn in the sunlight. I
watched as Pete's' face turned to horror and he dived for the ring and
wedged it back onto my finger, instantly stopping the burning. I
staggered backwards and almost fell until I felt strong arms catch me,
scoop me up and place me back on the wooden branch, leaning me against
the main trunk. "How did you stop burning? It doesn't make sense"
"Magic,
if I keep the ring touching my skin, I don't burn but as soon as I
release it, the magic stops, I burn and would eventually die" I stopped
exhausted from the burns and opened the clasp on the straw of the blood
bag and sucked up the delicious red liquid; as I did I could feel and
see my burns beginning to reduce and my eyes and fangs begin to change.
As they did, Pete looked up shocked, entranced by my transformation.
"Kate...."
I looked up at him, his head bowed looking down at the muddy forest
floor. "Can I ask you to do something for me?" He looked up, his vivid
blue eyes making it really difficult to concentrate but I nodded 'yes'.
Before he could finish what he was going to ask, I already knew, "You want me to turn you, don't you?"
He nodded slowly, as though he thought I would hurt him if he moved too fast.
"You really want this. Because I cannot un-turn you once you die.."
"I
want this Kate, more than anything" I took in a deep breath, calming my
nerves. Turning a vampire was something you had to think about, once
you turn a human you have to stick by them, train them and protect them.
If you fail; your life will be taken.
I took his hand and pulled
him up to his feet; he was tall probably 5'11, 5'12, with slightly
tanned skin and pale blonde hair. But the he had the most beautiful
vivid blue eyes; so blue they almost seemed fake, coloured contacts or
magic. I looked deep into his eyes, trying to search for something that I
could say to make him change his mind. But no matter how far I searched
his mind was set. His thoughts were of nerves but not regret.
I
let my fangs slide down into place from my gums, lifted my wrist to my
mouth and bit; leaving two perfect holes where blood began to seep. I
lifted it to his lips and pressed, forcing him to drink. I felt the pull
of the blood felt a wave of passion and pleasure flow through me. I had
never felt this before, this connection between human and vampire
wasn't supposed to happen. But I found myself pushing into him, while he
drank. The space between is closing to nothing, until finally he pulled
away; just as breathless as I was. His eyes locked on mine, a drop of
blood dripping down from the side of his perfect mouth and without
thinking I lent upwards and licked it off. But then I had to come back
down to Earth, I had to kill him.
"Pete...I am going to
have to kill you now" It came out soft and regretful, I always hated
dying but it was a necessary process. He looked down at me and nodded,
not bothering with words. I had to make the pain less, and I had to ease
my own attractions so I lent up and pressed my lips against him; the
taste exploded in my mouth a mixture between pure Pete and my own blood,
and after only moment I felt him pushing back, kissing me harder and
more passionate. Be licked my bottom lip, asking for entrance but I
denied him, he tried again but still I refused. I felt him moan into my
mouth and my legs went weak, but I didn't give in and then in a flash of
movement, my hands moved from running through his hair to round his
jaw, and I felt the earth-shattering sound of neck bones
breaking....
